In the last two weeks I have been “trying” to be on vacation: that time of year when we try to escape the routine, relax and compensate the family for the lack of attention that day-to-day requires us.
This year, because of the growth phase of my project and due to a number of projects we have in progress, I was forced to take a vacation... 2.0.
What's the definition? Simple: vacation where we take the laptop, 3G card, mobile phone and, worse, the “task list” (and GTD)!
Small correction: “ Holiday 2.0′′ is not a vacation. It's just a brief period when we physically move to places where others usually go on vacation. We, the ones from vacation 2.0, are a kind of extras who create environment.
And in this role of extras, not only have we already brought the “task list” but, even knowing that we are on vacation, everyone expects the same level of response from the period of...not vacation. Actually, it's worse. I believe they demand more of us. Because we're on vacation, they ask us to expedite their task so that we can stay on vacation (actually, I think it's just the fear of not doing them until the end of the vacation). After all... it is only a task; the “your” task. Of course there are the “others” (feeling “Lost”:) but... these do not exist.
In holidays 2.0 there is still a desperate factor: 3G! That false feeling that we can stay connected. Like in ads where a guy's in the pool e-mailing and cheating on the boss. Deceptive advertising at the worst level! Only those who do not yet have a laptop (and in this case, this whole post and this talk of “2.0′′ is ridiculously incomprehensible) do not know what it is to work on a laptop with direct sunlight (although they realize that when there is no sun they do not give up from the pool). 3G... as soon as we leave the urban centers, 3G becomes... an urban myth**!
Of course, before I go on vacation I separate my email accounts into priority accounts, email lists and public accounts. Even so, if you receive a few hundred emails a day, try accessing your IMAP account with variable speed GPRS.
That is, in a 2.0 world, there are things we want to keep 1.0. Lots of things! Many daily!
Given the time of year... vacation? Only 1.0!
