The KPI Mirage - Episode 6 from The Great (Digital) Illusion

Digital marketing loves numbers.

Clicks.

Impressions.

Engagement rates.

Beautiful dashboards glowing in real time.

And yet, none of them pay the bills.

Somewhere along the way, we confused measurement with meaning. We built an entire culture around numbers that look impressive but explain very little.

A campaign can generate millions of impressions and still generate zero business impact.

A post can “go viral” and still sell nothing.

A dashboard can look spectacular while the company quietly misses its targets.

The illusion is believing that if the metrics look good, the marketing must be good.

But vanity metrics are the desert mirage of digital marketing: they shimmer, they attract attention, and they disappear the moment you get close enough to ask the only question that matters:

Did it move the business?

Real marketing doesn’t chase numbers.

It chases outcomes.

Revenue.

Retention.

Trust.

Growth.

Everything else is just pixels pretending to be progress.

So the next time someone celebrates a campaign because it generated “great engagement,” ask the uncomfortable question:

Great engagement for what?
