On the Side: Computer Animation in 1962

I entered the computer world for interest in Graphic Computing (which I missed as soon as I had my first classes in college and realized that we were light years away from what was being done “out there”).

Maybe that's why, every time a new 3D animated movie comes out, with the excuse of being movies for the kids, there I am bringing the DVD and evaluating the evolutions from film to film (animation of hair, water simulation, etc).

And there have been so many developments (see Monsters & Co,

    Inspiration: Venture Capital

“ At early board meetings, I would try to give an accurate accounting of the profit and loss. He would look through me and ask what I really thought about when I was sharing.”

High Voltage Engineering CEO Denis Robinson, about General Georges Doriot

Of course the “numbers” count. Of course, companies have the number one objective to be self-supported; to generate profit. But we must not forget the “believe”, the “vision”, the “feel” (the “Big Picture”!).

Out of curiosity, the General Georges Doriot was one of the first American “Venture Capitalists”. He created the first Public Risk Capital in the US and founded the INSEAD.

Punk Marketing: Am I a punk?

Image not recoveredpunk marketing No, it is not by the Vinyl of the Dead Kennedy’s that I still keep (someone out there remembers the “Frankenchrist” and “In Gog we Trust, Inc?”), by the VHS (yep, I still have vinyil, k7, VHS). Although I still lived a “remake” of punk, my adolescence was marked by the end of 80 (Cure, Smiths, Echo & the bunnymen, Durutti Column, the initial phase of 4AD, etc.).

I refer only to the book “Punk Marketing” that I recently bought and for proving that the more I deepen some “conventional” marketing knowledge more reinforcement than: “It’s not the things that are complicated, we complicate them.” It is that despite the value of everything that the “smarts” say – from Trout to McKenna, Kotler... whatever – isn't it all about the customer?

Today, to conquer a consumer it is not enough to create “processes” of Marketing. You have to treat the customer with respect. Challenge him! Treat him intelligently. How clever. The Customer loves to be “stuck” or amused. And... the customer can! The client has power!

Richard Laermer and Mark Simmons, authors of the book, analyze this new reality of the market of advertising, brands, communication and the need to get rid of the “ Status quo ” and the “Radical quo ” and wrote a simple set of rules for a common sense-based marketing without “ bullshits”. I’m not very fond of “transcriptions” or “translations” but perhaps because I’ve lived a part of Punk culture (in music) and because I’m seeing myself in “no bullshit”, I think it’s worth sharing the Punk Marketing Manifesto:

    1. If you don't risk it, you die In times of change the biggest risk of all is not taking risks.

    2. Why not ask: “Why not?” Presupposed are just that. All we assume is usually a half-truth or generalization that at some point had a purpose, but now... castrates creative solutions.

“Customer Support” is the new Marketing!

    Customer Service Dialog

In the last 10 years, the effort needed to communicate with friends, clients or thousands of strangers is virtually... none. Write a message and send it by email, post it on a forum, Twitter, FriendFeed, Hi5, FaceBook, etc., costs absolutely nothing.

Despite this, with regard to customer support, the trend in large companies has been to “externalize” (outsourcing) and “mechanize” (you have heard of “processes”, right?:) and it has become increasingly difficult to be attended by someone who knows as much as we do about the problem that makes us seek help.

Today, the best customers of any company know more about the products and services it markets than most people working in the company itself. The “good customers” surely know more than most Call Center operators, usually unqualified “hand” with low wages, who serve the customer and follow a script.

    Reality check... being an entrepreneur.

Being an entrepreneur in Portugal is a major challenge that is made to appear.

And the problem is not only in the “entrepreneurs” (they exist!). Not only is there not a real policy of Risk Capital, incentives (they are for everyone but only more or less) and banking... Startups? Forget it.

For this reason, as an old Spanish friend said, “Less says, says and more does, does!”.

Because sometimes we forget that the goal of companies is not to get investments but something more basic like... generating revenue, a presentation of David Heinemeier Hanson, creator of Ruby on Rails and CoFounder 37signals which explains that sometimes it's hard to be the next FaceBook, Twitter, YouTube but... we can succeed in just... ** More of the same**.

Despite the somewhat squeaky voice... David is a brilliant guy who does an excellent “Reality check” here and explains how to create a (relative) success StartUp:

By the way... it’s worth seeing the rest of the series “ Startup School “.

P.S.: We are definitely entering a new bubble. You still don't feel in Portugal but you're already very visible in the American market... and this time we have numbers and metrics to support it!

    The World as Stage!

    Mystery of the visit

After 2 weeks totally wrapped in management BySide and in the campaign “ You got it. “, I go back to the Blog not to talk about the campaign (at least for now) but to talk about theater!

Yesterday, taking advantage of a (rare) moment of decompression in which I tried to have some “quality time” with the family, by indication of friends, also parents, I went to the Teatro do Campo Alegre see the play Infantil “ The mystery of the visit “.

Although the initial idea was to “decompress” (and have done so), the piece was pleasantly surprising because it was a kind of narrative that I have tried to “breath” (my way of not saying “obsessed”) in recent months: ARGs – Alternative Reality Gaming, which I call “nonlinear narratives”.

Before I talk about the play, I begin by explaining that an ARG it is an interactive narrative that uses the real world as a platform, often involving multiple media and game elements to tell a story that can be affected by the participants' ideas and actions.

    Meaning... The World as Stage!

About the play: a girl loses an earring during her last visit to the theater. To help solve the mystery

Interactive Marketing: Do you have Meo?

http://jatens.meo.pt In recent days I have not been able to pay attention due to the Blog because we were ( BySide ) to complete the Interactive Meo Satellite campaign.

It's not a good tone to use the Blog to promote your own work but this... is different.

It's different because it materializes our work. And it's different because we like the end result.

The aim of the Meo Satellite campaign is, in addition to the obvious disclosure of the service, to explain that now there are Meo throughout the country.

Supported by the Cats (Meo Commanders), the campaign takes place abroad, running in the country.

In the interactive section (our component), you leave your name, location and telephone (fixed or mobile). If the earth exists, the Meo Commanders locate the earth on the map and... they make a “call” to the user.

The interaction has variants: meet the call or not answer, land that does not exist, land with improper names...

Obviously the BySide component of profile creation, behavioral analysis, lead analysis, conversion, etc. is present. At the end of the interaction, a direct Click2Call is allowed to the Meo Call Center, allowing direct subscription of the service.

For now, look at the campaign in: http://jatens.meo.pt

    “Presentation Zen” @Google Talks!

No kidding. Garr Reynolds Yeah. The performance guru. And the author of the book “ Presentation Zen “.

Whoever is, regardless of area, age, religion, or anything else, if they usually make public presentations, plans to do or even not, should “listen” Garr Reynolds.

Basically Garr Reynolds explains and advocates why the presentations should be simple and direct, centered on the message and not... on the powerpoint.

This presentation is part of others @Google Talks... excellent series with a representative gallery of notables.

And for those who feel that it is not the type of “presentations”, I leave the following:

    “If you’re not appearing

    you’re disappearing.”

    Art Blakey

    and by the way

    “Presentation is the ‘Killer Skill’

we take into the real world. It’s

    almost an unfair advantage.”

    The MacKinsey Mind

BTW, the book “Zen Presentations”... is in my Amazon wish list ;)
