    Online Advertising: An Inconvenient Truth

    Lately, I have been able to explain to customers why online advertising can be misleading to the advertiser when it is based on “traditional” models of CPM (cost per thousand), where the advertiser allegedly pays for “visualization” of the ad.

    Image not recoveredValue Online Advertising by format from 2007 to 2012 (USA)

    According to the recent study “ The Eyetools/MarketingSherpa eye tracking study “, about 60% of site visitors Web see ads in the immediate visibility zone (typically, top half of the page). In the non-visible area (part of the page that requires Scroll) the situation worsens... although ads in these areas are visible to up to 75% of users, only about 25% actually sees the ads.

    Assuming that about 50% of the ads are in the non-visible area (conservative hypothesis!), using the data submitted by eMarketer for the American market, this represents a waste of about one billion dollars! It's not the right way to say it, but... 1 billion (I, I know! I know!:)) dollars wasted on advertising that is paid but is not “visualized” by users!

    TED Talks: Free the music that goes through our heads

    Tod Machover of MIT’s Media Lab invented the music technology behind the game Guitar Hero, and at TED2008 talks about what comes next. “Listen” some new interfaces for music - to play, compose, listen, enjoy.

    Machover introduces Dan Ellsey, a composer with cerebral palsy who uses MIT’s Media Lab tools to write and play his own songs. Ellsey drives his "My Eagle Song," in a performance that... you need to see.

    Curiosity: Guitar Hero has become a mass entertainment phenomenon. Guitar Hero III alone represented about $300 million in sales in 2007 (practically the same as the most profitable film of the year: Spider-Man 3).

    Manic Monday: Twittearth

    Twittearth

    This morning, another of many Twitter applications was released. In this case another viewer (actually... another excellent way to waste time). Despite that, Twittearth is... appealing. Basically, this is a mashup application that creates a 3D view of the earth (made with PaperVision ) using geolocation (using the Yahoo APIs ) to land tweets generated every 10 seconds, using free avatars ( fasticon ).

    The most interesting in all of this was following the viral effect. In this case the Word Of Mouse!

    The service was launched this morning. From 12:15 to 13:15, the number of pages on Google referring to Twittearth went from 26 to 967 (counted the Paul Dear ). At 2:55 the Twittearth had more than 10,000 connected users.

    During this period, Twitter references did not stop. That is, Twitter definitely takes over as another means of taking into account any viral action.

    • Curiosity:* without taking value to Yahoo's geolocation API, the PaperVision It's something I've been following for a while and it's going to give me a chance to talk.

    Online/Offline: A Better Match Than Fruit Yoghurt

    After following the habits of a 2 million (yes, 2,000,000) dashboard of online users, Comscore notes what common sense tells us about online advertising:

    • Generates visits to the advertiser's website;

    • Increases online sales;

    • Increases sales on offline channels;

    ComScore Study

    It makes less sense to separate online and offline advertising logics. Campaigns have to be planned in an integrated logic and not: the agency does Outdoors, television, radio, etc., and online guys do... online. More and more:

    • 1 the marketing year;

    • 1 planning;

    • 1 Global marketing team;

    About writing in Unipersonal Journalism (aka Blogging)

    blogging.png Like everything we do (or live), write on a blog, process nicknamed by another Big Friend “Unipersonal journalism” is part of a whole learning process. The form of writing cannot be the same as the typical 5,000 - character newspaper or magazine article. It should be shorter and more direct. More assertive.

    For being far from considering me “at ease” in the format of writing, and after this friend with “G” great made some constructive comments to me... I went to learn (I haven’t returned yet).

    Along the way, I found an opinion of Seth Godin that justifies his appearing before learning:

    Show up. Not writing is not a useful way of expressing your ideas. Waiting for perfect is a lousy strategy.”

    Free 2.0

    Today, when I arrived at the office, I had 100 free blog business cards waiting for me.

    Ooprint offers 100 business cards, totally free to anyone and I, as a good Portuguese (yes, we like “borlas”)... experienced. Here they are.

    http://vitormagalhaes.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/visitcards_avm1.gif

    There are 10 business card models to choose from for Bloggers. I chose orange (connects with the RSS symbol) with TAGs. Personalization was quick. Of course it's something limited but... it's free! The only cost is shipping ($5.9 USD).

    On the back, a reference to promotion and Ooprint (for $4 USD can be deleted). Fair enough.

    A good example of a good marketing strategy... not only did it make me try out the service, but it did it.

    I ordered on Monday, I got the cards on Friday! Now, I have Blog business cards for those who meet and comment on the Blog! :)

    P.S.: Ooprint also has Facebook cards!

    Just for fun...

    Still about my Twitter adventures... I just received an email with the following subject:

    Barack Obama is now following you on Twitter!

    I tried José Socrates but nothing! No Twitta! :)

    The truth is that Barack Obama's campaign is a truly 2.0 campaign. One of many examples:

    Advertising in times of crisis

    O eMarketer recently presented a study on online advertising that despite the global panorama of economic crisis, puts the world of online advertising against current. The study has a growth rate of 23% in the American market, keeping online advertising as the fastest growing medium.

    http://vitormagalhaes.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/093026.gif

    http://vitormagalhaes.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/093013.gif

    The success of online, late due to the expectations of the period of the new economy, is due not only to the fact that the Internet is now unavoidable but mainly to the ability to measure results, which encourages advertisers with reduced budgets, and to the fact that globally the targets of these advertisers spend more time online.

    According to eMarketeer, in the American market, research will represent 40% of advertising budgets online in 2008. This percentage will decrease slightly in 2012 (to 37.3%).

    On the other hand, budget growth in “rich media” and video is expected in relation to online advertising from 10.2% in 2008 to 18.5% in 2012.

    Something that confuses me... despite the market's desire to use successful paid models, whether by Leads or Conversion, as proves the global success of Google's AdWords and AdSenses, our market virtually DOES NOT campaign for Lead/Conversion, eternalizing the logic of CPM (Cost Per Mil) as a safe way to generate revenue for advertiser networks.

    • *In my view: looking for new means online! Meaning: Opportunity!
