    Holidays 2.0?

holiday 2.0 In the last two weeks I have been “trying” to be on vacation: that time of year when we try to escape the routine, relax and compensate the family for the lack of attention that day-to-day requires us.

This year, because of the growth phase of my project and due to a number of projects we have in progress, I was forced to take a vacation... 2.0.

What's the definition? Simple: vacation where we take the laptop, 3G card, mobile phone and, worse, the “task list” (and GTD)!

Small correction: “ 2.0 holiday” is not a vacation. It's just a brief period when we physically move to places where others usually go on vacation. We, the ones from vacation 2.0, are a kind of extras who create environment.

    Interactive marketing: Axe Mission 3

    http://www.missaoaxe3.com

After “Help Tiago”, Mission AXE 3 is another ARG (Alternate Reality Game) from FullSix where BySide provides the BySide WebCare interactive platform.

In this ARG, the secret formula AXE3 was stolen by Miss Min the Terrible and the world is in danger.

To help in the mission, the Axe-Men who participate can count on the help of Menage and Truá who will be walking around the country looking for clues.

In order to have a chance against Miss Min, the Terrible will have to merge into Menage-a-Truah, the Invincible.

If you accept the mission you can win PlayStations 3, a trip to Ibiza for 3 and 3 entries in the best discos.

    Good luck!

Inconvenient Truth: Micro and Minisites — Use Carefully

Image not recoveredmicrosite Speaking against customer initiatives, partners and some friends (I'll take it in the ears!), I've always been against using microsites or, if you prefer, minisites.

I never defended them. Not even in the time when my business went through creating websites (even though they make my life easier and generate additional revenue)!

Most microsites are not much more than online brochures, with appealing graphics and screaming to the world:

“In my company, messing with the website is so hard that we’ve already given up and so instead of solving the problem, take it (the microsite)!”

Of course the agencies encourage (much!) its use. It is that the sites of the “brands” already exist, always with difficult processes (read “impossible”), and do not create space for new developments (read “receits”). By suggesting the creation of a microsite, the agency quickly promotes the generation of new revenue; it does not need to deal with internal resources beyond Marketing; it works in a controlled environment; controlled costs; and, more importantly, profitable! Haah... and raise the portfolio!

The truth is that microsites are expensive because they consume expensive resources (the agency's cream) and die after a short time. Of course, the immediate goal is always noble: [Scoffs] Take the mark to the “next level”! But usually the time and money spent do not follow the results.

Rarely a microsite leads the brand to “next level”. This is because there are probably only two reasons why it is created: the website is no good and/or it is too difficult to do something new.

With the state of the art in online advertising and the possibilities offered by “rich media” actions, actions promoted on a microsite can be framed in external communication actions, either at the level of “budget* or decision-making.

Of course there are exceptions. There is always. And of course we can always try to justify that “** THIS** ” microsite is an exception (shhh... 99% will be wrong!).

The truth is that right now the Internet offers sufficient alternatives to the “microsite” and it is time to be intelligent and to escape conventional creative thinking. The consumer... just wants to get in, access what he's looking for and... get out. And this is the Internet. So... we should do it at the level of our branding online, that is, on our website!

Some considerations on causes and consequences:

    An Inconvenient Truth: Morons 2.0

Tumblr. - The Documentary from DaveAOK on Vimeo.

This Dave Seger’s documentary, in addition to hilarious and brilliant, illustrates the naked and raw reality of Social Networking, ReBlogging, etc., and a new type of profile that, as a man from the north, entitled “Morcons 2.0′′

All this talk about Web 2.0, Social Networking and now Web 3.0... is already boring. Don't piss me off, apple!

Every day new FaceBook’s, Hi5’s, and other clones are born. Only a small minority began to realize and take real advantage of LinkedIn, Twitter, FriendFeed and so many others say: “No, no... now the scene is thetumblr”. Big questions: What for?

We are still realizing the “scene” and suddenly the “scene” is already another “scene”. But this last one... will really be the “great scene”. At least until next time... "scene".

    Social Media: Summer K7

Okay... it's a generational thing. Totally '80s! Nostalgia! Yeah, yeah, yeah! Whatever!

The big thing is that there are little pleasures that... taste good. I'm even the guy who after surrendering to the iPod, wants a Squeezebox and a decent DAC because I also surrendered to mp3, I started to “consumer” playlists; I used Pandora before blocking access out of the U.S., and I say that Last.FM is “Web 2.0”. Despite this, I keep my collection of CDs (the stage of the CD has always been for me a “phase” only... necessary; never convinced me!) and keep my entire collection of vinyl (are enough) and my dish Planar Watering 2 who cost me my eyes (still in high school time, I had to work on vacation to buy it)!

    Pop Art 2.0

pop-art-ducky Despite all Hype around Social Media, I do not consider that the relevant part of this “moment 2.0” is marked by Social Networking.

MySpace was recently launched in Portugal (or is it just... in Portuguese?) with the right to a party at Lux and various promotional initiatives, Facebook has had what I call the “TiVo effect” (both marked a moment “outside”, without ever having had it “inside”), other networks have happened; Hi5 has happened, especially for younger generations (this comment makes me feel “old”), LinkedIN happened in the professional sense; in local version, we have TheStarTracker; Twitter, despite adding a small Portuguese minority; more recently, the plurk effect; my favorite, FriendFeed; and could continue to list examples that appear almost daily.

What really marks this moment is, and will increasingly be, the exit of the Browser to other interfaces (Last.FM and Twitter, with its “n” customers, are good examples), the RSS and the aggregation of content and the “Mashups”, where the aggregation of content is taken further.

And “ Mashups ” begin to be everywhere and in different formats. If on the one hand we have basic and functional formats such as aggregating sites/blogues, the recent fashion of Widgets or brutal ones Yahoo Pipes, we have many other formats of “mashups” (such as the Weezer video, in the previous post ).

    Popular Culture 2.0

    pop art 2.0

It is neither news nor news, but Weezer’s video clip “Porks and Beans”, released on May 23 on YouTube, is a tribute to a whole “Pop 2.0 Culture” and a kind of “Cartille 2.0”. Videoclip references, and includes, the main Web 2.0 icons: the “Internet Celebrities”.

Although all these references are totally familiar to me, I realize that there is a growing gap between a population living outside this new Web 2.0 wave and who doesn't know, doesn't live, doesn't realize what the ongoing revolutions in promotion capacity and the new media are.

For this reason, and because I feel that the Weezer video allows a process of “tasting” of this new reality, I decided to “speak” the video clip and present all the references, all the characters and memes, in a kind of “Manual of instructions for viral campaigns”.

One last note: Weezer video was not the first to use “YouTube Celebrities”. The Barenaked Ladies had already done so in 2006 with the single “ Sound of Your Voice “. Despite this, the video “Porks and Beans” goes further.

Look at the video, look at the references one by one, and watch the video again.

Chris Crocker: is already a recognized American Internet Personality that produces and acts on “Transgressive Art” videos. He became known with the viral video where, in tears, he defends Britney Spear’s in his reappearance at the MTV Awards. Video had 4 million views in... 2 days! The phrase “Leave Britney allone!” was celebrated! The video was seen 1.2 million times in the first 24 hours on YouTube, 3.6 million in May 2007 today... over 6 million!

Information: Online Advertising in Europe grew 40% in 2007

    http://vitormagalhaes.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/iab-europe-online-ad-spend-vs-us-2006-20071.jpg

According to the IAB (Interactive Advertising Bureau), the European online advertising market grew by about 40% in 2007, worth EUR 11.2 billion, compared to 7.2 billion 2006. With this growth the European market is approaching the American market where the sector grew by 26% (EUR 14.5 billion).

*“Despite the slowdown in advertising in traditional media, the growth of online advertising in Europe remains unwavering,” says Alain Heureux, president of IAB Europa. *“Not only does this growth come from smaller markets, which see a significant increase in the value of their market, but also from more mature markets as companies transfer their budgets” * adverts for online.” *

Two thirds (65% or 7.3 billion Euros) of the online advertising budgets in Europe were spent in England, Germany and France. However, some of the smaller markets showed high growth rates, with Greece growing 91%, Spain 55% and Slovenia 49%.

Portugal is not part of the IAB...

**Update: by comment of Nelson Pepper I just heard this is gonna change. The IABPortugal. Visit the site to learn more. **
